Aerosol spraying is an economical way for beginners to apply a first finish without the need for a complex setup or specialized equipment. While aerosols may produce a slightly rougher surface than spray guns, requiring more sanding for a level finish, the convenience and ease of use make it a popular choice.
ColorTone Nitro Lacquer is available in four different formulas, each sold separately: Clear Vinyl Sealer, Clear Sanding Sealer, Clear Gloss, and Clear Satin. Depending on the type of instrument and the desired finish, the recommended number of cans can vary:
- Electric guitar neck: 2 to 3 cans of lacquer (no sealer needed)
- Solid body electric: 1 can of sealer + 3 to 4 cans of lacquer
- Acoustic or archtop guitar: 1 can of sealer + 4 to 6 cans of lacquer
- Mandolin or dulcimer: 1 can of sealer + 3 to 4 cans of lacquer
- Banjo rim and neck: 1 can of sealer + 3 to 4 cans of lacquer
- Ukulele: 1 can of sealer + 2 to 3 cans of lacquer
The number of cans needed may vary depending on the thickness of the coats, the number of coats applied, and the desired final thickness on the instrument.
To ensure optimal results, it's important to use warm lacquer, not cold. Pro shops spray heated lacquer because cold lacquer can spatter, requiring additional sanding. To warm up the aerosol lacquer, simply soak the cans in a sink of warm tap water. Additionally, it's recommended to spray multiple thin coats in a low-humidity environment for best results.
