Erick Coleman, a renowned guitar repairman and StewMac tech advisor, has meticulously color-matched these finishes to original vintage guitars. The TV Yellow, for instance, is formulated to perfectly match a prime 1958 Les Paul Special, providing a semi-opaque finish that beautifully showcases the wood grain.
As Erick notes, "I see a lot of vintage guitars in my shop, and most aerosols don't really come close to looking like the colors they're intended to. These new ColorTone finishes nail the look of the vintage beauties I've had on my bench."
The ColorTone® Classic Colors Aerosols can be applied over smooth unfinished wood, sanded grain filler, sanding sealer, and even ColorTone Stains. To achieve a deep, glossy finish, simply add topcoats of the ColorTone Clear Aerosol Guitar Lacquer.
A complete guitar typically requires 1 can of sealer, 1 can of color, and 4-6 cans of clear topcoat. For best results, it's recommended to use warm lacquer, as professionals often spray it to reduce the risk of spatters that would require sanding.
To warm the aerosol cans, simply place them in a sink of warm tap water. The 13-ounce cans provide ample coverage, allowing you to effortlessly transform your guitar into a vintage masterpiece straight out of the can.
